“Film as a catalyst for global social change”

Deadbeat Films found their footing in live events, commercial work and documentary and fiction content. Founders Jack and Boris Thompson- Roylance have always had personal values centered around community, activism and empathy across their personal and professional lives. These values are now informing the creation of DEADBEAT IMPACT, a new department for change within Deadbeat Production company.

Deadbeat strive to have sustainable practice at the core of their film sets, regularly passing the Albert test on their documentary and fiction content; they are now looking to develop their Impact beyond sustainability. Audiences hold the power to coerce and demand new and compelling stories on their screens. DEADBEAT will use our skills in sales, and advertisement to present compelling arguments for  positive change with clear avenues for our audiences and partners to connect and take action.

“Creating bridges, sharing power and resources from the consumer to grassroots causes and activists through film and media creation”

What is Impact at Deadbeat?

Impact for film is a relatively new space, since the launch of Doc Society's Impact Field Guide there has been leaps and bounds in the Impact for Film space.

At Deadbeat our ambition is to share our knowledge and learnings around Impact for film so we may move collectively together towards the change desperately needed in our Industry. With this in mind our focus of 2023, as we launch and develop as a department, is around Inclusivity Connectivity and Accessibility into the Industry and the potential for positive social Impact film can have.

We believe that without dismantling the structures that have long Gate Kept the film Industry, resulting in a lack of diversity in storytelling and perspective, we cannot expect to see culture and societal norms change. It is our belief that film dictates culture, what we see on our screens is what we define as normal. The perspective of life presented to us has been that of a small section of society. As we look to 2023 we invite you to learn more about how Impact is influencing Deadbeat and therefore our outputs.

FILMMAKING WITH LEGACY.

Partnering with Water Bear Network, Choose Love and Counterpoint Arts, Deadbeat Impact has its soft launch on March 16th at the premiere of MATAR & The First Drop of rain; Making Matar at a night of three deadbeat studios films centered around refugees, Asylum seekers and the Right to Work in the Uk.

This trilogy of short films included AYMAN, MATAR and THE FIRST DROP OF RAIN  and was shared with an audience of activists, filmmakers, government officials and migrants and asylum seekers. The evening was followed by a Q and A with the film's core contributors Hassan Akkad, Ayman Al-Hessuen and Ahmad Malek. Beyond the premiere, a Pop-Event ran for three days with the ambition of engaging the public with the right to work for Asylum Seekers as well as making important bridges and breakthroughs in the campaign to Lift The Ban

Deadbeat's focus beyond this campaign is to offer introduction to Film Making courses and classes by the trilogy's core contributors to those from a migrant background and in the asylum seeker community. Whilst also running Impact discussions with production companies to look at how and where Asylum Seekers can be offered workplace placements with a credit system so when they get their asylum case approved they are able to receive a sum of money for their time and work, resulting in them having skills and community as well as access to finance.

This approach seeks to address the hostile environment created by the Uk government, our Impact Producer Hiba Noor, an asylum seeker herself guides us to ensure our approach and methods are successful and cause no harm to the community we seek to support

IMPACT AND OUR PARTNERS

Whilst we look at grassroots change through film within the Migrant community, we are developing a tiered system to engage our corporate partners in how they may support us in creating impact in the film space through our commercial partnerships. This includes additional Impact cost on budgets, allowing us, for example, to action the following:

  • 5 % Green steward on set, sustainable practice.

  • 10 % Green Steward, Sustainable practice, Finance committed to running further intro to film making courses for asylum seekers and those with a migrant background.

  • 15 % Green Steward, Sustainable practice, Finance committed to running further intro to film making courses for asylum seekers. Core finance committed to the Deadbeat Impact team to further their outreach and expand their team.

This tier system is currently in development, we would love to hear from you if you are interested in giving feedback and or learning more.
